At the age of 69, DJ Steve Wright, who hosted shows for BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 for over 40 years, passed away.
In a statement by his family on Tuesday 13 February 2024, his family expressed their “deep sorrow and profound regret” over his passing.
“It is with deep sorrow and profound regret that we announce the passing of our beloved Steve Wright.
“In addition to his son, Tom, and daughter, Lucy, Steve leaves behind his brother, Laurence and his father Richard. Also, much-loved close friends and colleagues, and millions of devoted radio listeners who had the good fortune and great pleasure of allowing Steve into their daily lives as one of the UK’s most enduring and popular radio personalities.
“As we all grieve, the family requests privacy at this immensely difficult time.” the statement reads.
The BBC’s directors of music, Lorna Clarke, paid homage as well, calling Wright “an extraordinary broadcaster – someone audiences loved, and many of us looked up to”.
She went on to say: “He loved radio, and he loved the BBC, but most of all… he loved his audience.”
Stephen Richard Wright MBE, who lived from August 26, 1954, to February 12, 2024, was an English radio personality, disc jockey, and occasionally a television presenter. He is recognized for having invented the zoo format on British radio, which is well-known for its outrageous, multi-personality style. For a period of twelve years, he hosted Steve Wright in the Afternoon on BBC Radio 1 and twenty-three years on BBC Radio 2, the nation’s most listened-to radio station. His tenure on the latter station ended on September 30, 2022. He carried on doing his Sunday Love Songs mid-morning show on Radio 2, and in October 2023 he succeeded Paul Gambaccini as the DJ of Pick of the Pops.
Wright was the host of The Steve Wright People Show, Auntie’s TV Favourites, Top of the Pops, Home Truths, and TOTP2 on BBC Television. Wright received recognition for his work, including the 1994 Smash Hits and Daily Mirror Readers Poll Best DJ of the Year awards. For his radio shows, he was named TRIC Personality of the Year in 1998. On February 12, 2024, he passed away.
After joining the BBC in the 1970s, Wright hosted the Radio 1 and Radio 2 afternoon shows.
