The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared a Diptheria outbreak in portions of Abuja.
Dr. Sadiq Abdulrahman, FCT Director, Public Health Department, revealed the outbreak at a news conference in Abuja on Monday.
During the news conference, Abdulrahman stated that the sickness had already killed a four-year-old child, and that outbreaks in Lagos, Ondo, and Kano states in January prompted a national reaction by the Nigeria Centre for sickness Control.
Diphtheria is an illness caused by strains of the bacteria Corynebacterium Diphtheriae, which generates toxins that cause breathing difficulties, heart rhythm issues, and death.
Causes
Diphtheria is caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which produces a toxin. It is the poison that has the ability to seriously harm individuals.
How is Diphtheria spread?
Diphtheria bacteria are primarily spread from person to person by respiratory droplets generated by coughing or sneezing. Furthermore, touching infected open wounds or ulcers may cause illness. Those who live together are more prone to get sick.
Diphtheria symptoms include a thick grey-white coating on the back of your throat, nose, and tongue.
A fever and a sore throat.
Your neck glands are enlarged.
Having difficulties inhaling and swallowing.

Diphtheria patients are usually no longer able to work 48 hours after taking antibiotics.
NCDC BEGINS SAMPLE COLLECTION IN ABUJA DURING DIPHTHERIA OUTBREAK
According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the federal capital territory is the subject of a continual sample collection.
A multi-sectoral national Diphtheria Technical Working Group has also been established as a framework for coordinating national monitoring and response operations.
So far, seven suspected cases have tested negative, and there has only been one confirmed case. Other suspected patients are currently awaiting test results.
According to the NCDC, the FCT’s health and human services department is partnering with the NCDC to implement control measures that will prevent the spread of diphtheria there.
Since the discovery of many diphtheria outbreaks in several states around the country, more than 790 confirmed cases have been reported.
Is diphtheria curable? (Treatment)
Diphtheria patients are usually no longer able to spread the disease to others 48 hours after starting medication. It is critical to take the antibiotics until the end of the specified term to guarantee that the bacteria are completely removed from the body.
