On Wednesday, former Vice President Mike Pence declared his candidacy for president, setting up a contest with his former employer, Donald Trump, for the Republican nomination.
Before launching his campaign in Iowa later that day, Pence released a video introducing himself as a Reagan Republican looking to restore conservatism to the United States.
Pence, a former governor of Indiana and six-term congressman, produced a launch video on his 64th birthday in which he attacked President Joe Biden directly and Donald Trump indirectly.
“President Joe Biden and the radical left have weakened America at home and abroad,” Pence says in a self-narrated 2½-minute montage of Americana. “We can turn this country around. But different times call for different leadership.”
“Today, our party and our country need a leader that will appeal, as Lincoln said, to the better angels of our nature.” Pence added.
In contrast, Trump has already launched personal attacks against other 2024 Republican opponents, like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Pence, a 63-year-old former congressman and governor of Indiana, was chosen in 2016 to serve as Trump’s running mate in part because he could support the socially conservative GOP base.
Pence, an evangelical Christian and longtime opponent of abortion rights, routinely declares that he is “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order.”
In the early 2000s, he ascended the ranks of the Republican Party on Capitol Hill, eventually rising to the position of third-ranking House Republican from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he won the governor’s race in Indiana.
Pence’s decision places him against Donald Trump, with whom he held the White House from 2017 to 21.
The former president is currently leading the race in the polls by a wide margin.
With support in the low single digits, Mr. Pence is typically positioned in a distant third place in surveys.
