Colon Cancer, third leading cause of cancer death – Surgeon

Colon cancer is the third leading cause of death from cancer and the third most common cancer worldwide, a General Surgeon has revealed.

Dr Bashir Lawal of the department of General Surgeon , University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH disclosed this while speaking on Midland FM health programme, Your Health & You, today.

The general surgeon who also disclosed that over 1.8 million people worldwide suffered from Colon cancer in 2018 called for serious modification of lifestyles to prevent Colon cancer amongst youth.

According to him, avoiding low fibre and high fat diets including beef, pork meat amongst others and modification of lifestyles such alcohol intakes, smoking, sedentary lifestyles could go a long way in preventing colon cancer.

Dr Lawal highlighted the symptoms of colon cancer to include anaemia, body weaknesses, fatigue, change in faeces, abdominal pain resulting from completely blocked large colon.

He, however, advised youth to ensure they are tested for colon cancer at least every five years for early detection, proper treatment and prevention of early deaths.

It would be recalled that Chadwick Boseman, one of the lead actors in Black Panther,a black American movie, recently died of colon cancer.
