KWIRS staff protests poor welfare

Speaking during a protest at the headquarters of the service, the chairman of the KWIRS staff union, Abdulraheem Sharafadeen raised issues which he said made the protest inevitable.

Non-payment of staff performance bonus since 2019, non-confirmation of staff appointments, non-promotion since January/February for staff that were due for promotion among other issues were itemised by the protesting workers.

Given specifics, the union leaders said KWIRS under the pioneer chairman, Murtala Awodun earmarked N200 million for staff bonus, an amount they said has been pruned down to N100 million by the present chairperson of the service, Mrs. Folashade Omoniyi.

“About 55 percent of KWIR staff are on N34,000 salary regardless of your certificate. It is the bonus that many rely on to augment the salary,” the union chairman explained.

The union chairman, alongside his secretary, Ahmed Salman, also explained the efforts they have made to bring the issues to the attention of the government without much response from the concerned individuals.
